100 Million User's Data In Facebook Has Been Leaked !!!

About 100 Million User's Data on Facebook Leaked ....

LONDON: The personal details of 100 million users of social networking website Facebook are now available for download after they were leaked online.

Ron Bowles, an online security consultant, used a code to scan Facebook profiles, collected data not hidden by users' privacy settings, and compiled a list, which is now available as a downloadable file, containing the URL of every "searchable" Facebook user's profile, their name and unique ID, the BBC reported Thursday.

Bowles said he published the data to highlight privacy issues, but Facebook retorted by saying the information was already public.

"People who use Facebook own their information and have the right to share only what they want, with whom they want, and when they want," the website said.

"In this case, information that people have agreed to make public was collected by a single researcher and already exists in Google, Bing, other search engines, as well as on Facebook."

"No private data is available or has been compromised," Facebook said.

The list has already been downloaded by over 1,000 people on Pirate Bay, the world's biggest file-sharing website. One user, going by the name of "lusifer69", said the list was "awesome and a little terrifying.”

But internet watchdog Privacy International said Facebook had been given ample warning that something like this would happen.

"Facebook should have anticipated this attack and put measures in place to prevent it," Simon Davies, an official of Privacy International, said.

"It is inconceivable that a firm with hundreds of engineers couldn't have imagined a trawl of this magnitude and there's an argument to be heard that Facebook have acted with negligence,” he said.

Facebook hit 500 million users in June this year.

Top 20 Indian IT Employers

        Well ... India is getting back in its IT field in a good way. There are lot of IT companies who are going to increase intake of engineers in the forth coming years...

The recruitment front is once again buzzing in Indian IT. After months of budget cutting and so-called rightsizing, hiring seems to be back with vengeance at IT companies. Almost all IT companies have revised their hiring targets.

As the companies announce their first quarterly results, we take stock of their hiring in the fiscal year 2009-10. IT industry body Nasscom has released its annual list of Top 20 IT-BPO Employers in India during the year.

Here's over to the biggest Indian IT/BPO employers during fiscal 2009-10.

TCS:
Little surprising that topping the list of biggest IT employers in India is the country’s numero uno IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Backed by a robust financial performance in the first quarter (April-May-June), TCS has raised its hiring target. The company now plans to hire 40,000 this year, higher than the around 30,000 it had projected earlier this year.
       The company in the Q1 added a net 3,271 employees, raising its total strength to 163,700.

 INFOSYS Technologies:
Next on the list is the country’s second biggest software exporter Infosys Technologies. At the end of June 2010, the company and its subsidiaries had 114,822 employees as against 103,905 a year ago and 113,796 at the end of fourth quarter (Jan-March).

During the first quarter 7,833 employees quit Infosys for various reasons, including involuntary attrition. The gross addition during the first quarter was 8,859 people, while the net addition was 1,026 only. The attrition rate in Infosys shot up to a whopping 16 per cent during the quarter (April-June).

Wipro:
 At no. 3 is the India's third-largest software services exporter Wipro Technologies. During the June quarter, the company added 4,854 employees taking the total headcount to 1.12 lakhs.

The company also announced that it plans to add as many as 20,000 employees in the next three years. In the month of Feb, the company gave a pay hike in the 8%-12% range with some even getting a 15% increase.

However, like its peers, Wipro too suffered high attrition rate during the quarter. The attrition rate at Wipro jumped to 15.8 per cent during the first quarter (April-June) of this fiscal (2010-11) from 9.8 per cent in like period year ago (2009-10) and 12.1 per cent quarter ago.

CTS:
Nasdaq-listed Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation, a leading provider of information technology, consulting, and BPO services, ranks at no. 4 on the list of India’s biggest IT employers. With over 50 global delivery centers, the company has approximately 80,300 employees as on May 4, 2010.

At the recent annual Nasscom HR Summit 2010, R Chandrasekaran, President and Managing Director, Cognizant, said that during 2009, nearly $1.4 million was spent on training activities. The average training period for an existing employee was two weeks.

 HCL:
Next on the list of biggest IT employers is India's fifth largest software services exporter HCL Technologies Ltd.

The Noida-based company, which follows a July-June financial year, said that it added 6,428 employees in the June quarter taking its total headcount to 64,557.

Genpact:

Sixth biggest IT employer on Nasscom's list is Genpact. As of June 30, 2010, total headcount at Genpact stood at approximately 42,500 employees worldwide, an increase from 37,400 as of June 30, 2009.

The attrition rate for the six months ended June 30, 2010, was 26%, up from 22% for the same period in 2009.

 Mphasis - An HP Company:
 MphasiS Ltd is at the seventh spot on the country’s biggest IT employers’ list. For the quarter ended 30 April, 2010, the company added net headcount of 1,429 during. The total headcount stood at 37,119 as of 30 April, 2010.

In December 2009, MphasiS gave a recompense bonus of 10% to all its employees. The company replaced its annual salary increment for its staff with a one-time bonus in order to ensure more variability in its employee wage bill.

Intelenet Global Services:

      Eight biggest IT employer in the country according to the list is Mumbai-based Intelenet Global Services Ltd, a third-party BPO company. One of the largest BPO employers in India, the company has approximately 32,000 employees as of June 2010.

The company recently figured in 'The Economic Times - Great Place to Work Survey 2010' at the 20th spot. The survey revealed that the company has made efforts to ensure that along with adequate facilities, work-life balance is also maintained via fun at work concept.

From having a two-week Employee Appreciation Programme where the employees' families are invited to take part in the activities to having facilities like a gym, diet and nutrition sessions and counsellor onsite, the company places employee happiness on its high list.

Tech Mahindra:

The 9th biggest IT employer in India is Tech Mahindra. Tech Mahindra is a joint venture between Indian auto major Mahindra & Mahindra and the BT group.

During the first quarter (April-June) of the current fiscal, the company hired 1,743 employees taking its total headcount to 35,267. The company plans to offer salary hikes in the current quarter. However, it said that hikes will hurt its margins.

Aegis:

At No. 10 is Essar Group's back office Aegis BPO. With presence in over 42 global locations, the company boasts of strong employee strength of over 39,000. The company is headquartered in Mumbai.

Capgemini Consulting India PVT Limited:

Next on the Nasscom's list is Capgemini Consulting India Pvt Ltd. In India, Capgemini has over 20,000 employees working across seven locations in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Delhi.   It has over 90,000 people in North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific region.

 WNS Global Services:

At No. 12 is the Nasdaq-listed second biggest BPO firm in India, WNS Global Services.

For the first quarter, the company reported revenues of $150.0 million, up 12.7% from the corresponding quarter last year and down 4.8% sequentially. The company's global headcount stood at 21,406 as of June 30, 2010.

Firstsource Solutions:

The 13th largest IT employer in India is Firstsource Solutions Ltd, country's leading pure-play BPO company.
       As of June 30, 2010, the company had an employee strength of 24,697. For the first quarter, the annualised attrition for offshore (India/ Philippines) was 55.4% compared to 43.5% in Q4 FY2010.
        
          The company has reported a consolidated net profit at Rs 32.1 crore as against Rs 35.6 crore (QoQ). Consolidated net sales declined to Rs 475.9 crore

      NYSE-listed Computer Sciences Corp is the 14th largest IT employer in India. India is CSC's largest world sourcing location outside the US.

      The company reportedly has more than 16,000 employees in India. The US technology services provider has about 92,000 employees globally. For the fourth quarter ended April 2, the company's net profit declined 32% to $259 million, or $1.66 a share, while revenue rose modestly to $4.24 billion.

Patni Computer Systems which has posted a 7.9% rise in net profit added 934 employees in the second quarter, taking its staff count to 14,893 at the end of June.

The company's attrition rate, excluding business process outsourcing workers, surged to 21.5% in the second quarter from 17.7% in January-March and 13.2% a year earlier.

The Open Source Software That Runs Facebook

           Facebook connects its 500 million users using an array of open source software to enable social networking as well as data intelligence. Facebook's open source Web serving infrastructure has a lot more than just the traditional LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) stack behind it.

           During a keynote session at the OSCON open source conference, David Recordon, the senior open programs manager at Facebook, detailed the infrastructure in use today at Facebook.
At the language level of the stack, Recordan noted that Facebook is using PHP by way of its own HipHop PHP runtime project. Facebook officially announced HipHop earlier this year as a way to speed up PHP operations, improve efficiency and decrease CPU utilization.
          
           At the database tier, Recordan said Facebook primarily stores user data in the MySQL database. He said that Facebook runs thousands of MySQL nodes, though he added that Facebook doesn't care that MySQL is a relational database.

           "We generally don't use it (MySQL) for Joins and we aren't running complex queries that are pulling multiple tables together inside of a database," Recordan said. 

           Recordan said that Facebook has three different layers for data. At the first layer is the database tier, which is the primary data store and where MySQL sits. On top of that, Facebook uses Memcached caching technology, then a Web server on top of that to serve the data.

"We're actually using our Web server to combine the data to do joins and that's where HipHop is so important," Recordan said. "Our Web server code is fairly CPU-intensive because we're doing all these different sorts of things with data." 

           In addition to MySQL, Facebook leverages a pair of NoSQL-type databases as well including Cassandra and HBase, which is part of the Apache Hadoop project.

"While we store the majority of our user data inside of MySQL, we have about 150 terabytes of data inside of Cassandra, which we use for inbox search on the site and over 36 petabytes of uncompressed data in Hadoop overall."
           Recordan said that Facebook's Hadoop cluster has a little over 2,200 servers in it, running a total of 23,000 CPU cores inside of them. He added that by the end of the year, Facebook expects to be storing over 50 petabytes worth of information.

           The Hadoop components help to enable Facebook to use the data it has to understand how people are using the site. Recordan said that Facebook uses data analysis for all sorts of product decisions including how Facebook sends e-mails and how it ranks news feeds.

           In order to help enable the data analysis, Facebook uses an open source technology called Scribe.
"Scribe takes the data from our Web servers and funnels it into HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) and into our Hadoop warehouses," Recordan said.
           The problem that we originally ran into was too many Web servers trying to send data to one place, so Scribe breaks it up into a series of funnels for collecting data over time."

           Recordan said that Facebook's Hadoop cluster is vital to the business and the system is highly monitored and maintained. Facebook has what it calls a Platinum Hadoop cluster, plus a second cluster called the Silver Hadoop cluster where data from the Platinum cluster is replicated.
Additionally Facebook uses the Apache Hive technology, which provides a SQL interface on top of Hadoop to do data analysis. 

           "A large part of our infrastructure is open source and we really think that it's important in terms of being able to allow developers that are building with the Facebook platform to scale using the same pieces of infrastructure that we use," Recordan said. "Fundamentally we're all running into the same sets of challenges."

How to rename a bulk of files in a single return key

        If you are the trigger-happy kind on your vacation and can’t live without posting them on Facebook or Flickr, then renaming all those files can be a serious pain. Cameras cannot do it for you. Here’s a quick hack which can rename all your files in one go.

       Open the folder in which your to-be renamed files are. Select the files you want to rename. If the files are not adjacent, hold down CTRL and click on the files you want to rename. Click on 'File' in the menu bar and then 'Rename' option and then type the new name and hit Enter.

How To Backup Windows Registry !!!

            Some of us like playing with our operating system such as changing the text that appears on the Windows start button (your own name instead of Start) etc ... It is your own interest in doing those things.... But one thing, what will you do when you lost all your important system files, and registry settings, which might lead to complete reformat of your OS, when you mess up with your OS ? ... So be careful when doing such things.. A good tip for saving such accidents is taking a back up of your Windows Registry.....If you are going to tweak around your system, you better back up your Windows registry. In case an error or hack goes wrong, you can always restore your registry to its original position. Here’s how.

  •     Click on Start--> Run and type Regedit and hit Enter. 
  •       Now choose My Computer from the left folder pane
  •       Now click on File--> Export and give it a file name
  •       Select a location to store it, ideally on a CD or a pen drive.This will take some time but will pay in the long run.

Will Facebook Leave Its 2.5 Million Users Behind ???

                   There has been a lot of unrest between Facebook authorities and some members on the social networking site from the Muslim community. After all the controversy that took place when Facebook held a contest of Prophet Muhammad's Caricatures, Pakistan had even temporarily banned Facebook in the country .
                   This time around, Facebook has deleted a few pages related to Islam like -- Facebook.com/Rassoul.Allaah and Facebook.com/Logo.Ramadan, Facebook.com/Quran.Lovers, Facebook.com/Love.Mohammed, which reportedly had a huge number of Facebook "likes" and fans. In response to this, a Muslim group has given the company a two-week notice to bring back those pages or have threatened to leave Facebook.

                   The group has claimed that the pages Facebook pulled down were "totally peaceful and free of any hate speech". The group went on to say that if Facebook doesn't take any action to make up for this irreparable damage, about 2.5 million Muslim Facebook members will quit Facebook and join madina.com - a Facebook-twin for Muslims. Their demands also include adding a Facebook Term that illegalizes disrespecting Islamic religious symbols and disabling any Facebook Page, Group or Event that shows direct or indirect disrespect towards Islamic religious symbols.

Pakistan Bans Facebook Temporarily !!!

             Lahore High Court has issued an order to ban the access of popular social networking site Facebook in Pakistan for holding a contest of Prophet Muhammad's Caricatures. Chinese News Agency Xinhua reported that Judge Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry had instructed the Ministry of Telecom to block the access of Facebook in Pakistan and submit a written reply by May 31.

             Islamic Lawyers Movement had filed a petition against a competition that was about Islamic religion founder Prophet Muhammad's blasphemous caricatures on Facebook. The lawyers stressed, "The competition has hurt the sentiments of the Muslims." The Ministry of Telecom officials told the court that after the news was reported, Facebook pages showing Prophet Muhammad's blasphemous caricatures were blocked.

             However, the lawyers argued that the entire website should be blocked and hence Facebook is reportedly blocked in Pakistan by Telecommunication Authority. So until a written reply is received, the website will apparently be inaccessible in Pakistan .

Facebook might keep track of the user profiles after their death ...!!!

         Courtney Purvin got a shock when she visited Facebook last month. The site was suggesting that she get back in touch with an old family friend who played piano at her wedding four years ago. The friend had died in April. She said, “It was like he was coming back from the dead.”
         
          Facebook, the world’s biggest social network, knows a lot about its roughly 500 million members. Its software is quick to offer nudges about friends you have not contacted in a while. But the company has had trouble automating the task of figuring out when one of its users has died.
         
          Facebook says it has been grappling with how to handle the ghosts in its machine but acknowledges that it has not found a good solution. “It’s a very sensitive topic,” said Meredith Chin, a company spokeswoman. Given the site’s size, “and people passing away every day, we’re never going to be perfect at catching it,” she added.

 
         James E Katz, a professor of communications at Rutgers University, said the company was experiencing “a coming-of-age problem.” Now, people over 65 are adopting Facebook at a faster pace than any other age group, with 6.5 million signing up in May alone, according to the research firm comScore. People over 65, of course, also have the country’s highest mortality rate, so the problem is only going to get worse. 

Early on Facebook would immediately erase the profile of anyone it learned had died. Chin says Facebook now recognises the importance of finding an appropriate way to preserve those pages as a place where the mourning process can be shared online. Of course, the company still needs to determine whether a user is, in fact, dead. 

         For a site the size of Facebook, automation is “key to social media success,” said Josh Bernoff, an analyst at Forrester Research. “The way to make this work in cases where machines can’t make decisions is to tap into the members,” he said. “One way to automate the ‘Is he dead’ problem is to have a place where people can report it.” That’s just what Facebook does. To memorialise a profile, a family member must fill out a form on the site and provide proof of the death. But this option is not well publicised, so many profiles of dead members never are converted to tribute pages.

Search Engine Optimization(SEO) Tips !!!


1. Keywords In Title
Each webpage within a website should contain a unique title, and meaningful keywords and keyword phrases should be included in the title of each webpage.

2. Keywords In URL
Use hyphenated keyword phrases in the URL's subpages, as some search engines take notice of keywords used in URLs. The hyphen used between words allows search engines to better identify and recognize the separate the words used.

3. Anchor Text
When linking to web pages, use descriptive keywords to identify the links to webpages. The "anchor text" used to link to a specific webpage is weighted as part of some of the larger search engines ranking criteria. In other words, search engines make note of the text used to link to specific webpages, and use the text relevance to determine a search ranking for those pages.

4. Keywords In Header Tags
Keywords should be used to highlight sections on a webpage, as mini-titles over each subsection in a webpage. The subsection heading keywords should be identified as header tags or bolded in the HTML. The added emphasis, by applying specific HTML properties to subtitles, is noticed by search engines and given extra weight in the search ranking process.

5. Content Length
Each webpage should contain a minimum of 250+ words in text. Generally, it is best for the text to be formatted in sentences and small paragraphs. Bulleted lists can also be used for text contained in a web page.

6. Meta Tags
Keywords should be included in both the "description" meta tag and the "keyword" meta tag in the header of each webpage (please note: not all search engines pay attention to keywords in meta data, but for those that do, it is worth the effort of including them). Each webpage in a website should contain unique descriptions. The description should be 20-30 words in length.

7. ALT Tags
Keywords should be used in the "alt" tags for images, to describe the images.

8. Keywords In Image Name
Keywords should be used in the naming schemes for the images themselves.

9. Spider-able Navigation
The websites navigation should be in a format that allows search engines to easily "spider" the contents of each page and follow the links.

Utilize Analytics
After optimizing a website, it then becomes a waiting game. In order to assess the effectiveness of any optimization, you will need to evaluate web traffic. That can be accomplished using web logs and various tracking products. There are a variety of solutions available; find a solution that provides statistical data in a meaningful format and benefits your company's needs.
Keep in mind that the effects from optimization will not be immediately visible in your web logs, or in the search engines. The webpage will need to be spidered and indexed first. The frequency of spidering and updating varies greatly, depending on the age of the domain and popularity of the website. Patience may be needed to see how effective changes are.

Tweak Optimization
After reviewing web logs, you should tweak optimization with minor adjustments, and then re-evaluate the results. Keep in mind that search engine optimization is an ongoing process, and rarely are the results visible overnight. Evaluate web logs on a regular basis, and modify optimization to enhance your listings.

Aim in life in the sequence
When I see you all students at Bannari Amman College of Engineering, I want to share with you, how does achievement come in your life? There are four proven steps; Shall you all repeat with me: Having an aim in life before 20 years of age;
Acquiring knowledge continuously; Sweat, Sweat, Sweat – that means hard work towards the aim and Perseverance that means you have to defeat the problem and succeed. Dear students when you go out of this school, what will you carry with you? Can you attempt to answer my question? Yes. It is knowledge. Now I am going to tell you about knowledge equation.

Knowledge
Dear students knowledge has three components. Creativity + righteousness + courage.

As a youth of my nation, I will work and work with courage to achieve success in all the missions.

When I see you young graduating students, I was asking myself, if I was in your place today, what thoughts would come to my mind. One question each one of you has to ask is – “what I will be remembered for?” Dear youth, as you come out of the college with basic knowledge in what ever field you have taken, be it Engineering, Technology, Architecture and management or whatever be your stage of your education – graduate, post-graduate– let me assure you the country has plenty of opportunities. The first is transforming India into an economically developed and societally inclusive nation. For that every one of you will get involve 7000 PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) connecting 600,000 village where 700 million people live. Another opportunity is that of climate change
and global warming, due to excessive usage of fossil fuels, which is a challenge in front of our global society. We have to work for energy independence and every one of you should look at, how you can evolve such a mission using green sources like solar power, wind power, hydro power and bio fuel. Such a mission should also take into consideration the environmental sustainability of our nation and the world. Today, when I am in the midst of students of engineering and technology, I would like to talk on the topic “Technology is the foundation for the sustained development of the nation”.

First I would like to discuss research teaching research.

Research Teaching Research
Good teaching emanates from Research. The teachers’ love for research and their experience in research are vital for the growth of the institution. Any institution is judged by the level and extent of the research work it accomplishes. This sets in a regenerative cycle of excellence. Experience of research leads to quality teaching and quality teaching imparted to the young in turn enriches the research.

Technology is the non-linear tool available to humanity, which can affect fundamental changes in the ground rules of economic competitiveness. Science is linked to technology through applications. Technology is linked to economy and environment through manufacture of knowledge products. Economy and environment are linked to technology, which promotes prosperity to the society. We have to use innovation to generate high value added products for becoming a global player. The foundation of academic research is creativity.

Now, I would like to present my experience of learning system design, system integration and system management while I was a student.

Learning integrated system design
While I was studying aeronautical engineering in MIT, Chennai, 1954-57) during the third year of my course, I was assigned a project to design a low-level attack aircraft together with six other colleagues. I was given the responsibility of system design and system integration by integrating the team members. Also, I was responsible for aerodynamic and structural design of the project. The other five of my team took up the design of propulsion, control, guidance, avionics and instrumentation of the aircraft. My design teacher Prof. Srinivasan, the then Director of MIT, was our guide. He reviewed the project and declared my work to be gloomy and disappointing. He didn’t lend an ear to my difficulties in bringing together data base from multiple designers. I asked for a month’s time to complete the task, since I had to get the inputs from five of my colleagues without which I cannot complete the system design. Prof. Srinivasan told me "Look,
young man today is Friday afternoon. I give you three days time. If by Monday morning I don’t get the configuration design, your scholarship will be stopped." I had a jolt in my life, as scholarship was my lifeline, without which I cannot continue with my studies. There was no other way out but to finish the task. My team felt the need for working together round the clock. We didn’t sleep that night, working on the drawing board skipping our dinner. On Saturday, I took just an hour’s break. On Sunday morning, I was near completion, when I felt someone’s presence in my laboratory. It was Prof. Srinivasan studying my progress. After looking at my work, he patted and hugged me affectionately. He had words of appreciation: "I knew I was putting you under stress and asking you to meet a difficult deadline. You have done great job in system design”.


Through this review mechanism Prof Srinivasan, really injected the necessity of understanding the value of time by each team member and brought out engineering education has to lead system design, system integration and system management. I realized that if something is at stake, the human minds get ignited and the working capacity gets enhanced manifold. That’s what exactly happened. This is one of the techniques of building talent.

The message is that young in the organization, whatever is their specialization, be trained in system design, system integration and system management which will prepare them for competitiveness wherever they take-up work in developing new products, innovation and undertaking higher organizational responsibilities. Teacher has to be a coach like Prof. Srinivasan.

Now let me discuss about convergence of technologies.

Convergence of Technologie
The information technology and communication technology have already converged leading to Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Information Technology combined with bio-technology has led to bio-informatics. Now, Nano-technology is knocking at our doors. It is the field of the future that will replace microelectronics and many fields with tremendous application potential in the areas of medicine, electronics and material science. When Nano technology and ICT meet, integrated silicon electronics, photonics are born and it can be said that material convergence will happen. With material convergence and biotechnology linked, a new science called Intelligent Bioscience will be born which would lead to a disease free, happy and more intelligent human habitat with longevity and high human capabilities. Convergence of bionano- info technologies can lead to the development of nano robots that may results revolution in healthcare system. Nano robots when they are injected into a patient, my expert friends say, it will diagnose and deliver the treatment exclusively in the affected area and then the nano-robot gets digested as it is a DNA based product.

Convergence of ICT, aerospace and Nano technologies will emerge and revolutionize the aerospace industry and electronics leading to nano computing systems. This technological convergence will enable building of cost effective low weight, high payload, and highly reliable aerospace systems, which can be used for inter-planetary transportation.


When I was traveling in an Aircraft in the United States, I was told that much of its controls where software driven and most probably developed in India. When I presented my credit card, I was told that it was being processed in the backend server located in Mauritius. When I walked into multiple software development centre, Bangalore, I was fascinated to find that it truly presented a multicultural environment. A software developer from china working under a project leader from Korea working with a software engineer from India and a hardware architect from the US and the communication expert
from Germany where all working together to solve the banking problem in Australia.

What message do we get from these events and many such occurrences in the past decades? Do they not indicate a new world order emerging? Technology has made world to come together. For the past few months, I had several opportunities to meet with world specialists, economists and leaders in India, Israel, UK, USA and other countries. The outcome of the discussions led to interesting possibilities for taking education forward in a “borderless world”.





Integrated Action for developed India
To achieve the distinctive profile of India, we have the mission of transforming India into a developed nation. We have identified five areas where India has a core competence for integrated action: (1) Agriculture and food processing (2) Education and Healthcare (3) Information and Communication Technology (4) Reliable and Quality Electric power, Surface transport and Infrastructure for all parts of the country and (5) Self-reliance in critical technologies. These five areas are closely inter-related and if progressed in a coordinated way,
will lead to food, economic and national security.

India’s future missions
Dear graduating friends, I would like to present, what type of opportunities will be available to the professional graduates in the coming years.

1. Agriculture and Food processing: Increase the productivity into 3.4 times and concentrate on Food processing and marketing. Annual investment is around $20 billion.

2. Infrastructure: Apart from rural and urban infrastructure, one hundred million homes have to be built with energy efficient and water efficient systems. Annual investment in this sector will be around $80 billion per year.

3. Automobile: The export has to be 50% of our output. We
are expecting a business volume of $200 billion by 2016 from the existing $45 billion.

4. Ship Building: High Dead weight ships have to be built
in the country. This will have a business volume of over $50 billion.

5. Information and Communication technology: We have
to keep pace with the growth inspite of global recession by applying ICT for India. We are expecting to reach business volume of $200 billion per year by 2012.

6. Pharma: India must account for atleast 25% of generic
drug produced world over. Pharma vision aims to reach the business volume of $50 billion by 2016.

7. Aerospace: 70 seater passenger jet aircraft has to be
designed and developed involving 20 billion dollars of market for the next 10 to 15 years.

8. Rail-vision: Railway length has to be increased, metros
have to come for faster transportation and multi-level station systems have to become operational to reduce city crowding, average speed of the train has to be doubled. Average annual investment will be over $25 billion.

9. Energy Independence: By 2030, we should attain energy independence through renewable energy sources such as solar and wind; nuclear and bio-fuels for transportation. Average annual investment will be over $30 billion.

Conclusion: The knowledge society in 21st century
Let me now discuss with students, the profile of knowledge society which you are going to experience in the country next few decades in this century. The world in the 21st century will be a knowledge based society with multiple opportunities. I was reading a book, “Empires of the Mind” by Denis Waitley. This book gives, what type of the new world which we are facing now? What was yesterday and what is today. I have modified certain points of the author to suit our conditions. I have also added a third line which relates to action of university.

It specially says that “what worked yesterday, won’t work today”.

Today - knowledge is power
University will be a powerhouse for knowledge

2. Yesterday - Hierarchy was the model
Today- synergy is the mandate
University will be enabler of intersection of mutiple
faculties towards mission goals

exposure to the needs of sustainable development

Today – customers come first
Education should inculcate sensitivity to “customer” Needs

Today – teams make decision
University can inject team spirit

Today – creativity drive status
University is the breeding environment for creativity

Today – Competitiveness is the key

Education with value system is the need of the hour


In the knowledge economy the objective of a society changes from fulfilling the basic needs of development to that of empowerment. The education system will be promoted by creative, interactive self learning – formal and informal education with focus on values, merit and quality. The workers instead of being skilled or semi-skilled will be knowledgeable, self-empowered and flexibly skilled. The type of work instead of being structured and hardware driven will be less structured and software driven.

Management style will emphasize more on delegation rather than giving command. Impact on environment and ecology will be strikingly less compared to industrial economy. Finally, the economy will mostly be driven by knowledge and knowledge driven institutions and industries. The emphasis in knowledge society will be on sustainable development.

I am sure, the education system in Noorul Islam institutions provides, technology and knowledge to the students as a foundation for their career and thereby facilitating the development of the nation.
